I received a press release today from various sources in government. One in particular made me giggle. Some highlights from it:
LICENSING DEPARTMENT MAKES INTERNAL CHANGES TO PROCEDURES
Wednesday, September 16 – The Vehicle Licensing Department is informing the public that driver’s licence applications will now require a passport size photograph in accordance with the road traffic regulations 2009.
According to Chief Licensing Officer, Ms. Lorna Christopher, this amendment has been added as a means of identification and it allows the department to have adequate records on file. “In addition, driver’s licence classes have also been re-classified and a fingerprint will now be required in order to obtain or renew all drivers’ licenses,” Ms. Christopher said.
Learner drivers are also affected by the legislation. Now according to the law, anyone possessing a learner driver licence will not be able operate a vehicle between the hours of 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Yes, the expats on islands usually giggle about the number of passport photo's we need all the time! We generally all "walk with" several at all times! And don't for a second think that you can get away with using the SAME passport photo from last year even if your looks have not changed..... Even though we pay $75.00 for the fancy new work permit card every year, we still need that passport photo...
Wouldn't the machine/computer that takes your picture and puts in on your license keep a record of what you looked like or am I nuts??
It was years ago they made us take blood tests in order to get a drivers license (although apparently they cannot match a picture with it!) so fingerprints are not so unrealistic. I can see next they will want syphilis tests like for the driver's licenses. Apparently they have also clamped down saying EVERYONE who is here on work permit MUST get a local drivers license and take the written driving test (you hear that Richie and Lisa!) you are no longer allowed to drive with a temporary one, as I understand it, many people on work permit had been driving on temporaries for DECADES. I just never thought of doing that!...

On another note, I received this email today from Conservation and Fisheries on a Turtle that has a tracking device on it that is now in between Jost and Tortola, all the way from the Turks and Caicos...
"If anyone happens to see a large green turtle with a small, bright blue box attached to it, don't worry - it is a satellite transmitter. (see attached)
"Suzie" was satellite tagged and released from East Caicos in late June by the Turks and Caicos Islands Turtle Project a collaborative initiative between the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) and the School for Field Studies (SFS) in the TCI, and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and the University of Exeter in the UK.
From her release in late June to the end of August she stayed close to the northern shore of East Caicos, where she may have been nesting, but on the 1st September she started migrating eastwards away from the TCI. The latest data from Suzie’s tag suggests she is now between the islands of Jost van Dyke and Tortola in the BVI, indicating she may live in the BVI but will migrate to the TCI to reproduce or vice versa. The longer the tag remains on the turtle, the more we will find out about her journey.
Suzie's tag could last for up to a year. When she surfaces to breath, the tag transmits signals to satellites orbiting in space, and these signals reveal her location. The satellite maps and pictures of Suzie can be viewed online at
