Kerry,
"Lion Fish at the Indians"....I hope that person was wrong on the fish identification. Lion fish will devastate the tropical fish that are present in ther BVI waters. With no known predator, they will take over. And, as you know, they have a pretty nasty sting. We have lion fish all up and down our North Carolina coast. Sport fishing used to be very productive (snapper, grouper, black sea bass) and now it is pitiful. Thanks to the invasion of the lion fish. Wherever I dive on our local off shore wrecks, there are schools of these damn fish. Unfortunately, there is no answer on how to get rid of them. Bob Cardini
There have been 3 sightings of Lion Fish now in the BVI, although no pictures or specimens. It appears we are not going to be able to keep them away.
I kept a sharp eye out for them on the Indians today, but I did not see any. I guess they will multiply though and we will see them! Bahamas and Turks and Caicos have also been quite devastated from them in spots, and I hear about divers going out on a dive and killing/catching 60 and then 2 weeks later going back and catching another 40!! This is in a place where they just started showing up two years ago... |
