“INTERNATIONAL FLOTILLA” WILL TAKE OVER BVI WATERS
DURING THE 11TH LEVERICK BAY POKER RUN

Tortola, British Virgin Islands, 7th May 2012 – With nearly three weeks to go, over 105 vessels have already pre-registered for the 11th edition of Leverick Bay’s Poker Run. Out of the total number of entries, 55 hail from the BVI. The rest are from various countries and neighbouring islands such as St. Thomas, St. Lucia, St Martin, USA, Canada, and Puerto Rico leading the pack with its “Puerto Rican Navy” registering 25 boats so far.

The event will hold several activities for its participants throughout Memorial Day weekend, with the run itself scheduled for Sunday, 27th May. The starting point will be the Leverick Bay Resort & Marina at 11 a.m. The run includes stops at Scrub Island Resort and Marina; Village Cay Hotel and Marina, Tortola; Pirates Bight Bar & Restaurant in Norman Island; and Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor. Lastly, participants will return to Leverick Bay to pick up their last card and turn in their complete poker hand.
The best hand wins a Grand Prize of up to $15,000 cash, based on the total number of entries. Cash prizes will also be awarded to 2nd and 3rd place winners, with other prizes given out to the 4th, 5th, and 6th place. Awards will also be handed out in categories such as the most original boat, best boat performance, best-dressed crew, and best-dressed lady. Participants who do not have a boat can join one of the participating boats.

In addition to an exciting race, the celebration will feature live music, beach BBQ’s, fashion shows, beach parties, an awards ceremony and, of course, the famous Moko Jumbies.

I hope that you are all having a good season, although it must be beginning to wind down now. I wanted to let you all know that this weekend is the Royal BVI Yacht clubs annual “Lowell Wheatley Anegada Race” from Road Town to ………..well you know where. It is being sponsored in part by Red Stripe and Goslings and promises to be a lot of fun. Lawrence and Lorraine are putting Dark and Stormy’s and Red Stripe on special ($4 and $3 respectively) and there is always a great party after the dinner. Don’t usually remember too much about it, but it is one of the best parties of the year.

A couple of years ago, a charter boat won the race up (I think that it might have been Fantasy Island but not 100% sure) so charter boats do have a pretty good shot at winning, but this year we are billing the event as a “cruising fun pursuit race” with the emphasis on FUN. That doesn’t mean that we won’t all be trimming our sails and tweaking every little thing we can think of. The boat to beat this year is “Team Red Stripe….REBA” a C & C 41. We will buy every skipper who beats this boat (and I’m on it) a drink at the bar when we get there.

I hope that we see some of you up there for the race. Have a great rest of the season, and even if you can’t race, come up for the party.

Greg and Vanessa on Charter Yacht Blue Passion have smartly revamped their entire charter program and offering. I was very impressed by this yacht and crew last year, and indeed, have had happy charter guests onboard since.
One of the assets for charter yachts today is to be nimble with their offerings & pricing as events happen in the economy, with charter brokers and with guests. Vanessa & Greg ask questions, and make continuous adjustments which I admire.

My friends Cam and Rhonda...should be showing up at another charter yacht near you, but for now, Quest is announcing their new crew on board this summer. New crew often means discounts too, "get to know you specials" and that always works!

Breanker and Quest. Kristian and Marianne have just had their 6th anniversary of purchasing these two 58' catamaran yachts. They aptly run Breanker. Rhonda and Cam, good friends of mine, have just started their second season on Quest and have already finished a twice repeat guest for me

Quest and Breanker are perfect for tandem charters, as you have two yachts, maintained to a high standard, with the same amount of equal cabins, which means you can have 16 in your party!
I also like the crews on both yachts, so that all around it is a great package..Both yachts run around a 7 night inclusive rate for up to 8 pax between $14,500 and $17,500..There are options for half board, or various specials ongoing thorough the year that we can normally take advantage of..

Charter News from Tara Vana- Grenadines for summer anyone?

One couple that I have gotten fond of on the crew side over the last couple years is Missy and Rick. Missy always seems like she has a smile a mile wide and Rick looks like a naughty little boy. I was disappointed to hear this fall that they were moving on from one of the charter boats I booked, but I was super excited to see them at the St Thomas boat show with a boat that they had purchased just TWO weeks ago!

Tara Vana is a bit quirky of a boat, with an illustrious history. In fact, I had taken a picture of it on the dock last spring when it had come into the charter market and really never did anything on the docks at Village Cay and put it on my list of boats to find out more about. This is the picture I have had sitting around in a "to do" file for quite awhile.. Then it quickly went up for sale...until Rick and Missy bought it a couple weeks ago (and blamed it on me from reading my blogs on boat ownership!) This is not your typical cookie cutter charter boat, and personally, for me, I think that is part of it's charm and it will do very well.

This is a 50' Crowther Custom Design that was built in 1994 and may be one of the few (and probably only in its size!) that has sport fishing chairs on board. It has hosted many celebrities over the years in Bora Bora, and sails. FAST. It was set up for sports fishing, and can back down at 10 knots without burying its transom doors which most of the yachts here can't even do going forward..
It should, it boast 2 x 125 hp Yanmar Turbo engines! So much for me thinking it "looked clunky and top heavy" when I first saw it...

In a cool feature that I have not seen too much anywhere else on our boats here, the outside cockpit area has an air conditioned section, so you can dine outside in cool comfort when it is hot!

I have some pictures of the inside as well. They have put high quality toppers and linens on all the rooms, the only thing I would say that one of the staterooms has quite a high step to get into the bed with low head room, so you would not put 70 year olds in there (unless of course, you wanted them to stay their all week and not make any noise!)
You can see out the hatches while lying in bed...

I saw many of the yachts this year sporting these japanese style wash basins, just like many hotels are. I personally, seem to get the water everywhere but in the bowl, but apparently most people are more coordinated then me as they are popular!

The saloon and galley has a lot of high end appliances, lots of room and large windows to look out of as well...

This yacht goes out at a 7 night inclusive rate between $12,500 and $14,500. It is still open for Xmas! The yacht has or will have all the usual toys on board including SCUBA diving with a divemaster.

I was on Paradise at the November boat show and had not had time to put up the new pictures I took of the yacht yet. It looks good!
Paradise is 62' and takes a maximum of 4 charter guests at a 7 night inclusive rate between $6990 and $8375. You can also choose a half board option if you like, which can give you a chance to experience food on shore and on the yacht.
