Antigua Burn Victims Plea for aid Posted by Kerry Hucul

On the evening of Saturday 12th April three local Antiguans prepared for their usual Saturday night roadside barbeque in English Harbour. For those familiar with Antigua, roadside barbeques are a common sight, particularly on a Saturday evening. Caribbean fare cooked on a charcoal grill is offered to locals and tourists alike and is part of the of the yachting scene around English Harbour and Falmouth. Marlon Hunte, his wife and a friend, Paula Jacobs set up their barbeque and began to prepare for the evening. Marlon's wife, tasting the barbeque sauce, thought it might have turned sour and decided to return home to collect some more. Marlon and Paula remained to light the barbeque. In order to encourage the barbeque to heat up quickly Marlon decided to throw some petrol (gasoline) from a can at the barbeque. Unfortunately, the flames flashed back to the petrol can and it exploded into the air. Instinctively, Marlon must have turned around as he received his burns mainly to his back. Paula received the full force of the exploding petrol. Marlon's wife who is expecting a child, heard the explosion from her house and rushed back to the scene. The two burn victims were rushed by ambulance to Holberton Hospital, St. John's, Antigua where it was determined that both victims required treatment in a specialist burns unit of which Antigua has none. Antigua's National Parks Authority immediately set about three tasks, finding a specialist burns unit which could take the victims, organising an air ambulance and raising funds to meet costs. Both victims are uninsured. By Sunday these three objectives were achieved although substantially more funding is required. Paula whose twenty sixth birthday it will be on Saturday and mother of two children was air-lifted to Barbados and has suffered third degree burns to 70% of her body. She remains in a critical but stable condition. Barbados is not equpped for the seriosness of her condition and a Emergency Medevac is URGENTLY needed to bring her to Florida. Marlon (31) received 70% second degree burns and is in Barbados. He is stable, awake and talking. Many from the yachting community will know Marlon who was formerly of Absolute Refrigeration and now running his own business, A Zero Refrigeration. May 12th update... Paula was evacuated to a hospital in Boston, I don't know how it was pulled off as 2 FL hopsitals wanted 1 milion U$, another 1.5 million! She is still on a ventilator, has had 3 skin grafts but there is not much skin to take from her.. It is anticipoated she'll be in treatmnent for 1-2 years. Her kids are with their dad. Marlon is in Guadeloupe, has had surgery, is breathing without supopoirt now, will be there about 6 months - 1,700 euros/day. His wife had a baby daughter last week....bad times ahead for these families... Please help if you can, the smallest donation will be appreciated. A bank account has been opened, please email me for the details of the account if you would like to help! Saturday, May 3. 2008

New crew on Charter Catamaran Libreterre Posted by Kerry Hucul

Comments (0) Trackbacks (0) New crew on Charter Catamaran Libreterre![]() We are proud to announce the arrival of our new Libreterre team, Capt Adrian Midwood and partner Alexandra Fredricks Having met while employed in the Caribbean working off the island of St. Martin, the two enjoyed sharing their passion of the ocean with the young adults they were mentoring while running teen adventure programs. Young, energetic, experienced, motivated, multi-talented and lingual are just a few words that describe these two—a welcome addition to our Libreterre team. ![]() Adrian caught the travel bug early in life and left his hometown quickly after his high school graduation. His destination…the ocean, and he hasn’t stopped. He has since traveled the globe, endlessly chasing wind, perfect waves and boats. He has been employed in the surf charter industry in Indonesia, and has worked as a chef on a 80ft live-aboard in the Banyak Islands off northern Sumatra. The Banyaks are mostly uninhabited and even more so, uninhabitable, making for some interesting work. But that didn’t deter his spirit and he continued his relationship with boats adding yacht deliveries in the Pacific to his repertoire. Having grown up on boats and working in the water, Adrian was accustomed to the sight of land but decided it was time spread his wings. He hopped on a dilapidated wooden cutter, sitting or rather, rotting away in Honolulu’s Ala-Wai harbor just to see where he would end up. After his experiences onboard Adrian decided being a crew member wasn’t for him. It was Captain or bust. Adding to his ever-growing CV he began driving day charter vessels off the West Coast of Vancouver Island in his native British Columbia. He fondly remembers the hundreds of islands and inlets, stacked with old growth rainforests, bears and ancient cultures. Spending twelve-hour days with meandering grey whales, playful humpbacks, majestic orcas and the thick, dense, impenetrable fog. Though enchanted by his Canadian coastline Adrian felt it was time to move on, deciding that scuba diving was the next, natural step in a career on or in the water. He opted for New Zealand. Here Adrian drove a dive boat, North of Christchurch in the sleepy town of Kaikoura. Next stop, the Caribbean. When not on the water Adrian has been employed as a chef, waiter, bartender, construction worker and his favorite, coaching outdoors sports. He has taught snowboarding, surfing and kite boarding all over the world. He felt it was time to bring his love of teaching into his boating career. Adrian signed on to be a Capt. for 21-day live-aboard teen adventure camps. Here he ran a 47ft nautitech catamaran with usually 12 students, a dive instructor and dive master intern on board, and you thought Libreterre was going to be tight quarters. Island hopping through St. Martin, St.Barts, Nevis, St. Kitts, Statia and Saba is not a bad way to spend the days. On board these trips Adrian was teaching all aspects of the yacht life, including IYT accredited courses. As well he had the joy of getting in the water, with the kids all doing a variety of PADI courses he was able to join them on multiple dives a day and assist the instructors when needed. Would you like more information? We also have some pictures we can share taken at the last boat show! Give us an email! When it comes to water you’ll be hard pressed to find someone more motivated. Adrian is an avid surfer, kite-surfer, diver, sailor and all round leisure activists. If you have an interest in learning any of these sports, or even better know how and want to enjoy them on your trip, Adrian can facilitate it. Alex is a water rat, complete with webbed toes! Her nickname as a child was “fish.” Alex has been fortunate enough to be both a student and dive master intern on the live-aboard charters that both she and Adrian have worked on. From the tender age of fourteen, Alex was sent away to the Lee and Windward islands of the Caribbean, Fiji and Vanuatu—to name a few—to sail and scuba dive her summers away. After her adventures at sea, Alex ventured inland, where she studied art history and philosophy at New York University’s Florence campus. After a year of culinary experiences ranging from unsalted Florentine bread to the fresh fish and pasta dishes of the Amalfi Coast she ventured to the Big Apple where, in an effort to stay near the water, she became a coxswain on the NYU rowing team. When not on the East river, she was busy completing her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications with a focus in Photojournalism and Cinema Studies. Upon graduation, it was time she head back to the warm, blue waters of the Caribbean. Spending the summer of 2007 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Alex worked aboard a 46ft. Bahia Catamaran acting as a dive instructor, first aid instructor and mentor to young students. Honing both her teaching and deckhand skills, Alex has since grown to include surfing and kite-surfing to her repertoire of waterman skills. When not in the water however, Alex enjoys practicing yoga and is more than happy to join you on the beach for an early morning Yoga series to stretch out tired muscles from other day’s activities or to wake up the senses for another fun filled day on Libreterre. Received an email today from Bob White, the captain of Gypsy Queen. This is a 38' packet yacht that does captain only charters. When I met him at the St Thomas boat show last fall, I thought he would be a great host to spend the week with on his boat!
![]() ![]() In mid June of 2008 Gypsy Queen will depart Antigua for a summer of “adventure chartering” down island and on to Venezuela. Capt. Bob will host adventurous sailors seeking a cruising experience for two-week-long segments of the trip. A very minimal charter fee helps to keep Gypsy Queen in good working order and to assist Capt. Bob in staying afloat. All normal boat expenses and provisioning are then shared by all parties. Gypsy Queen is an Island Packet 38, cutter rigged. She has two comfortable cabins and two heads with showers, and is a very comfortable and stable cruising vessel. The summer of 2007 was the first summer of “adventure chartering” for Gypsy Queen and Capt. Bob, and was such a success that they are doing it again. Here are some suggestions for two week itineraries: Antigua to St Lucia – last 2 wks of june St Lucia to Grenada – july 1st Grenada to St Lucia – mid july St Lucia to Grenada – august 1st Grenada to Los Roques (one week to get there – 2 overnight sails involved, one week cruising) - mid august Cruising Los Roques - sept. 1st Cruising Los Roques then passage (overnight sail, two days) to Puerto La Cruz – mid september The charter fee is $3,000 for two crew persons, two weeks. Capt. Bob asks for a $1,000 advance deposit toward expenses to be paid at time of boarding. Any unused expense monies will be refunded. In Nov, 2008 our rate for weekly, two pax charters will be $3,950 per week. This rate will include open bar, breakfasts, light lunch fare and two fine dinners prepared by the Captain. Other evening meals may be prepared by guests in Gypsy Queen’s well stocked galley or taken ashore. This rate does not include cruising and customs fees which are paid by guests. ![]() ![]() Email us for more information on Gypsy Queen at admin@saildivebvi.com Wednesday, March 26. 2008

Voyager makes changes to its crewed ... Posted by Kerry Hucul
in Voyager Yachts at

Comments (0) Trackbacks (0) Voyager makes changes to its crewed charter program![]() Voyager announced some important changes in their crewed charter program in the latest broker newsletter. Lets see if we can go over some of them here. Voyager has been a company that you can never sell a crewed charter based on the crew, as you never know who it will be from one week to the next. They seem to change, move around and just disappear quite quickly. What you have to sell Voyager on is there pretty modern boats. If you like the "new" minimalistist plastic and white everywhere, then you will like their boats. If you like varnish and wood, look elsewhere. Their 10 guests yachts, the ones in the 5700 class, used to run with three crew, with a full boat. They will no longer run with three crew. They will run with two. I think (know) that everyone in the industry is facing a shortage of decent, trained, crews. Voyager, being the spot that a lot of crews start in the industry, is probably feeling it more then most. There broker newsletter talks about the "crew dynamics" being difficult with three. Yes, that can be hard. Most crews do not like to work with a third wheel and most third wheels don't want to work with a couple and get in the middle of their dynamics! It has always been the hardest on yachts. Apparently they are giving the crews more support in the turnaround department, so they will have cleaners come on the boat, and have hired a team to help manage the crewed fleet, which will take some work off the crews shoulders. The other change they have done is gone to a "in house rendezvous dive service" This means you no longer dive off of the charter yacht you are on. Instead, oh, I will just copy and paste what Voyager said! Better then me paraphrasing! SCUBA diving is an integral part of the VOYAGE charter experience for many guests. It has been challenging for usto find top quality crews that meet the VOYAGE standard that are also qualified SCUBA dive masters. To assist the crews with SCUBA diving, we now have hired an -house dive master who will rendezvous exclusively with our crewed yachts for diving. We will charge $70 a dive for certified divers (payable in cash to the Dive Master). This fee is for the Dive Master Services, transportation to the dive site, SCUBA equipment and air fills. Diving will be arranged by the crews with our dive master for your clients upon embarkation of the charter. Note that weather conditions and yacht itineraries may affect the dive destinations. The crew can schedule up to 3 dives a day by appointment, based on availability, yacht location and weather conditions; 10am, 12 noon and 3pm within the St Francis Drake Channel. This schedule allows divers to enjoy the best light and conditions while diving the spectacular sites located between Norman, Peter, Salt and Cooper Island. Is this better or worse? Well it depends, to me it says that Diving and having the properly trained crew on each yacht has become more hassle then the benefits were. It may mean a better product. However, there is definitely some disadvantages, that I won't even begin to list, so if diving is going to be more then once or twice a week in your charter yacht plans, I would choose a different boat. Voyager has also announced a down island program this summer for crewed yachts, but that will be another entry! Ask us if you have any questions about Voyagers yachts or programs! We are happy to help! Sunday, March 23. 2008Well done BVI Charter Yachts

Eric and Evelin on Aloha Malolo followed on a recent review they had from a charter in St Martin. They also have new SCUBA gear! Some still in boxes.
![]() "We had a great time, and now find ourselves comparing everything here at the resort to our superior experience on the Aloha Mololo. The food Evelin provided along with her obvious love of preparing cannot be matched here on the island. We are aware of the crowds, the noise, music (not of our choosing), the trash on the beach etc. We were spoiled and we know it, therefore we both have decided to move in with you on the boat. We are good at chores and Gail can sail...I can shop for the best local whole foods and continue to instruct you on whole foods eating. You'll be a locavore before you know it! What do you think? You could come live with us for 4 months (July thru Oct.) where our home has the best weather of anywhere, then we'll all head back to the boat and cater to the gay and lesbian crowd. We'll sleep in hammocks on top, as to free up our room below for guests. We've got it all figured out, you only have to sign on the dotted line below and it's decided. Be well,'Judy" Check our their page on our website for more details! ![]() Friday, February 29. 2008

Press Release- Feb 27th, 2008
From: Promenade Sail Dive Charters To: All interested parties Promenade Sail Dive Charters to donate proceeds from March yacht charter to support the VIEC (VIrgin Islands Environmental Council) Court case on Beef Island ![]() A long time Sail and Dive Charter yacht in the British Virgin Islands, Promenade, would like to give back to support the local environment that has given so much to us and our guests over the years. Hans Creek, on Beef Island has always been a special place for Promenade , and the crew have always offered guided kayak and dinghy tours through the mangrove area, to see the baby sharks, upside down jellyfish, and see the pelicans. As a business, we have watched in dismay as more and more areas of the British Virgin Islands have been paved over, or off limits and believe that unless responsible environmentalism is practiced, there will be nowhere left for us to cruise TO any more here except, from marina to marina. Promenade has a cabin only sailing ( a cabin only sailing is where you can rent a "cabin only" instead of having to find a large group to rent the entire yacht. This allows 2 guests to enjoy the amenities that a much larger yacht offers) for 6 nights March 30th, Sunday and Saturday. The regular cabin cost for a cabin only sailing is $3800.00, for two guests. We will offer two cabins, each for two guests, at a special cost of $2500.00, with $2000.00 of the cabin fee being donated to the VIEC Beef Island Court case. This includes all activities, food and beverage. Please help us in our efforts to protect the environment that has given so much to all of us on the water over the years. If you cannot come yourself, buy a cabin and donate it to a worthy individual. We encourage everyone who has an interest in the environment and the British VIrgin Islands to donate to this worthy cause. We have further donated as a member of the British Virgin Islands SCUBA Organization, which recently donated a substantial sum to help protect the waters that we all SCUBA dive. Just wanted to drop a quick line on the blog to introduce myself up in the cold country that is Canada! I do miss the year round warm weather whenever I worked on charter yachts down in the Caribbean. I am based out of Alberta and like to get away as much as I can checking out new places and boats to see them on. In the last year this has ranged from Mexico to the Caribbean, Hawaii and the states. My mother made me travel the globe when I was young (usually complaining in the back seat unless she was taking me to Disneyland!) but I sure have the traveling itch now! Thanks mom!! I am going to put some of that knowledge to use working booking charter yachts, anywhere in the world, but initially specializing in the Caribbean and in mega yachts! As some of you know, the British Virgin Islands recently became a UK Category 1 registry for yachts over 150 tons, and is actively building mega yacht marinas as we speak, along with all the accompanying services that they require. St. Maarten is already a major Caribbean destination in the Caribbean for the mega yachts with all the extras that french islands are known to offer.
Since working in the family yacht business in the Caribbean, I have owned and developed several different types of companies in Alberta Canada, everything from Clubs and Restaurants, to Entertainment including Casinos. I specialize in not only customer service but hospitality tourism and I look forward to working with you to book you on your perfect yacht vacation for your family, and i excel in putting corporate yacht charter events together with all my contacts while working with The Wynn Casino and Entertainment Complex in Las Vegas. Something that seems to be in shorter supply every year among the crews!) AND they like moving around the Caribbean! This summer they will be offering charters down in the San Blas islands! They also offer "learn to sail!" whew! You need energy for all that! Today they announced that they have just received all new SCUBA gear. We have a page on them on our site, in fact a couple, start your search here at: Aloha Malola and then you can email us for more details and availibility. Bet you are thinking that this entry has something to do with a crew change! Well, yeah partly right! Received this newsletter tonight. I always giggle when boats say they are now going to be doing a monthly newsletter as when we ran boats I could barely get out one a year!
Put it in blog form though and i am good to go! Don't get it personally! Anyways, here is their newsletter... ![]() Liberte' is on the move again this charter season, busy cruising the waters of the Virgin Islands, initiating new visitors and reacquainting returning guests to the easy flow of Island life. Christmas and New Year's saw many boats, as usual. Lots of families find the Island experience on a sailing vessel a good nontraditional way to bring all together during the holidays. You've heard of a 'destination wedding', this is a 'destination Christmas/New Years'. Everybody laughs alot and spends memorable moments together. If this sounds appealing, you may consider it for future holidays. Liberte' will be keeping you up to date with her happenings this year via this monthly newsletter. We've decided those of you in colder climates need a bit of sunshine during winter months to remind you there really is a land where the breezes blow every day and flip flops, shorts, a bathing suit and beer money are the only daily necessities. Here is a brief profile of crew, just in case you don't already know us. ![]() Meet our 'new' Jacques! No, we didn't send him in for a makeover. This is Jacques (with an s), again a native of South Africa. He is new to Liberte' but not new to the water or boats. He is an experienced diver, is excited about exploring all the Virgin Islands have to offer in the snorkeling and beach departments and loves to fire up the blender for cocktail hour. I think you will find the Liberte' Hurricane, our new signature drink, a great addition to our sundowner activities. ![]() Sandy has returned with some new recipes she is ready to share with you. Summer was spent visiting children and her one (exceptional) grandson. Between running to Trinidad to complete the work on her own sailboat (Rogue) she is ready to welcome you aboard Liberte' to make some new memories in these tropical Islands. ![]() Liberte' would not be Liberte' without Captain Gordon. He again chose the Caribbean over his beloved South Africa to show off the Islands to anyone wanting to explore them. Gordon has spent 18 years in these waters and loves to share his favorite spots. Liberte' spent the summer in Trinidad keeping her appearance in check and is ready to kick up her heels with the trade winds that visit these islands each year during season. ![]() There's really nothing quite like moving from one beautiful Island to another. To wake in the morning, grab a cup of something hot and wander out on deck to see how the day is presenting itself. I especially love the early morning before anyone else is stirring. But then again the nights, filled with a thousand stars, are incomparable. ![]() Future issues of Limin' on Liberte' will include some photos of recent charters, favorite recipes from the galley and bar and any other item we feel you may find interesting. Please visit our website at libertecharters.com and we hope you call us for pick up at your favorite dinghy dock soon. ![]() From the Galley! Passionate Key Lime Pie With mostly passion fruit for flavor, this is a twist on the usual 'limey' pie. Crust: 1/2 cup walnuts (chopped fine) 3/4 cup crushed cookie (I use McVities digestives or ginger snaps) 1/2 cup (or so) sugar 6 tablespoons melted butter Mix these all together and press into pie plate - set aside. Filling: 4 eggs yolks (well beaten) 1/3 cup passionfruit concentrate 1/4 cup key lime juice 1 can sweetened condensed milk Beat together and pour into crust. Bake 15 minutes at 350 degrees. If you care to make a meringue topping, put it on now and return to oven until the meringue browns. Allow to cool before refrigerating or the meringue will 'weep' some. If your choose to top with yogurt (plain or vanilla), whipped cream or sour cream, cool pie before adding topping. I've spiced these toppings to add interest - powdered ginger, lime zest, nutmeg - just get creative. I have also added candied ginger (very finely chopped) to the crust with good results. Bon apetit!!! Click on over to our web page on Liberte if you would like more information on how to book them or similar yachts at Liberte Friday, February 15. 2008

Keeping on the theme of changing crew. Here is todays. I did not know the old crew from Adam, so a new crew does not mean much! As a PADI Dive Master, he can also arrange and advise on diving and snorkeling excursions. As Chef/Mate, Constance has prepared meals and provided exemplary service for up to 30 guests in a variety of situations with rave reviews. Activities included sport fishing, chartered yacht cruises, jet skies, diving and unique horse back riding and jeep excursions, as well as private tours. Their research developed safe and clean agents and contractors to facilitate these events and coordinated tour operators to ensure a first rate experience for guests.
