I blogged about this yacht after seeing it at the Tortola Boat Show in May, and how much I liked it and the enthusiasm of the couple who owned and operated it.
This is a great monohull for two guests who are interested in doing a bit of SCUBA diving as well....
"Hi from the crew of Scorpio,
We haven’t been idle for the last few months: Scorpio’s interior has been completely re-varnished – a real labour of love but it does look immaculate!
Scorpio is now equipped with Air Conditioning – including a separate unit and thermostatic control in the guest double cabin. – We will run the A/C each evening to cool the cabin before guests go to bed. However we will charge an additional fee ($30/night) if guests require the A/C left operating overnight."
Scorpio has recently released their newest rates for the coming 2010/2011 charter season (which I have up on my webpage about them here) BUT
THEY WILL HOLD THE OLD RATES FOR ANY CHARTERS CONFIRMED BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF NOVEMBER, AT $5525.00, 2 GUESTS (excluding the coming holiday season)
They have recently updated their website with all the guests comments from this season (verbatim they say!) here
Retweet Welcomed!

Three Moons Yacht and Crew recently sent around an email to share some of this past year's favorite pictures and to remind us what a great value they are for a truly all inclusive, high end, yacht vacation in the Virgin Islands. I know this is one of the yachts that I would want to go on just to taste some of Shelly's award winning cuisine!

Baby Kaila-New Crew! Mere & Jonny Spector
83yrs & snorkeling! Mr. Keeler
Quotes from Three Moons:
"Just A Thought:
We enjoyed seeing the movie Eat, Pray and Love this past weekend; but we agree that we don't need a year-long traveling experience to find our "center". We all do need to remember that each of our guests may be on their own "personal journey" looking for something that's needed in their lives. We meet each person in our lives for a reason...don't you agree?
Our Charter Rates Haven't Increased...Yet!
Please note that New Year's has booked; but Christmas is still available.
Eight Guests: $18,000.00 or $321.00 per person, per night
Seven Guests: $17,000.00 or $347.00 per person, per night
Six Guests: $16,000.00 or $381.00 per person, per night
Five Guests: $15,000.00 or $429.00 per person, per night
Four Guests: $16,500.00 or $500.00 per person, per night
Aren't you glad to know?
Rates at this level of service cannot be beat!
Isn't it nice to know that Three Moons continues to uphold the level of personal service that she has always been known for? What does that mean? We don't skimp on anything no matter the cost or the economy! All inclusive still means "ALL INCLUSIVE" aboard the yacht....there are no extras for cruising permits, taxes, fuel usage, air conditioning and no additional fees for standard bar & wine. We are a premium yacht with three professional crew, that continues to serve in premium style! Rates beginning at $321.00 per person per night for an 8 passenger charter at this level of service and high quality award-winning cuisine cannot be beat!"
Peter Island Glow!The Perfect Day!
Birthday Cakes Galore! Award-winning Cake
Yes! We have lobster!...on every charter!
The crew of Three Moons is at home in Tennessee and will be ship shape ready for charter again on December 15th.
"With over 100 relatives within a 40 mile radius of our home near Nashville, Tennessee, something is always going on! Between family gatherings, projects at home and enjoying our favorite hobbies, the time during hurricane season always flies"
We have many more pictures and details on Three Moons on our website page here

Recently received a note with the latest blog entry and pictures from Sophisticated Lady, a Beneteau 51' from down island and their vacation trip back up to Canada for a couple weeks. I am just going to reprint it here. They do have cabin space left on a long sail coming back up the island chain to the British Virgin islands in the fall....
Yes, we've been having some grand new adventures aboard 'Sophisticated Lady' recently... And some on land!! In June we completed a 4-week cruise from the British Virgin Islands down through all of the entire Eastern Caribbean and ending in Grenada... The Isle of Spice!

Jenni & I at Trellis Bay in the BVI's
We had many stops along the way including St Martin, St Barth's, St Kitt's, St Eustatia, Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent, and the stunning turquoise waters surrounding the beautiful Grenadines!

'Sophisticated Lady' at the dock in Gustavia Harbor, St Barth's

Jackie, Wendy, Margaret, and Carlos..
all aboard for our 2010 Down Island Adventure!!

America's Cup boats, match racing at St Martin!

Carlos & Jackie enjoying the view as we sail past Nevis!
It was a fantastic cruise, and the sights and scenery never cease to amaze... even me, and I've been here how many times before?! ;o)

Marigot Bay, St Lucia
We're looking forward to another great cruise on the Northbound trip starting on October 15th, and can't wait to pass on the stories about our stops at each island... We have one cabin left for that adventure, so anyone interested should let us know soon!

Rush hour... Island style!

Happy Island, at Union Island, Grenadines... Gotta love it!!
We're back in Grenada now, after a short holiday back to Canada to visit family and friends... I use the term 'holiday' lightly as it soon turned into quite an adventure itself... but I'll leave you for now with another sunset, and let Jenni pick up from there! Take care until next time!
Cheers,
CaptainRick

Land Based Adventures...

I'm not quite sure where to start without the consideration of the unforeseen series of events that have taken place over the last two weeks. Rick and I took a holiday to see his family in Ontario, Canada, and to our surprise a warm welcome was extended shortly after touchdown only to be followed by a smashed car window and our luggage being stolen. To paint a more vivid picture for you, I must say that as a sailor you may already know that worldly possessions are very minimal and a couple of nice outfits are often coveted. So it goes without saying that Rick's wardrobe is now down to a few old shirts with built in "armpit ventilation" and a pair of shorts 2 sizes too small. I couldn't help but chuckle everytime Rick would say "What should I wear today?" as he rummaged through his father's hand-me-downs these last few weeks. I had the guilty pleasure of watching him hop around the room trying to squeeze into those size 32's.

Happily back underway after fixing the smashed window!
All jokes aside, in addition to losing our luggage the thieves helped themselves to our passports as well. So there we were in Canada with endless days spent getting our passports replaced and jumping through miles of red tape.
Luckily, both Rick and I have wonderful parents who helped in every way possible to get us on that one way flight to Grenada. These last two weeks have been quite an adventure, and we had our fair share of laughter, tears and everything in between.

Heading downtown Toronto to the passport offices!
There was one thing, however, that seemed to sum up our experience in Ontario, Canada. We found ourselves saying that everything happens for a reason quite often. Oh, and the famous words of my father "It is what it is" kept repeating itself.

My office at Rick's parents in Canada...
where we spent endless hours doing paperwork for passport replacements!
I learned a lot of life's lessons. The obvious one that rings in my ears most often is my mother's voice saying something along the line of, "You can never be too prepared for the unforeseen. Now photocopy that passport, Jenni. If you lose it, you'll be thanking your lucky stars you did copy it ". Thank you, Mom. I have certainly conversed with my "lucky stars" a lot lately! I have also been reminded that through every misfortune there is opportunity. Let me explain... I enjoy cruising, of course, but I also love racing. Racing is short spurts of intense stress, a necessity of good communication and ability to make crucial decisions with not a moment to spare. Sailing in so many ways has taught me how to accomplish things in life that I would've otherwise been unable to by knowing the right time/circumstance to either cruise or sail. It has taught me to adapt to "It is what it is" , "You can never be too prepared for the unforeseen" and "everything happens for a reason".

Surrounded by beauty at our Canadian escape!
I am typing this blog right now thankfully as I am in route to Grenada, because Rick, myself and our parents all worked together to make it happen after our misfortune.

We realized it is what it is, and we can only control so much in life and that by being prepared for the unforeseen is never a bad idea.

Rick looking happy to be heading home after a great visit with family
Oh and may I add, I'm sipping on my rum and ginger listening to Kenny Chesney approaching touchdown in 10 minutes! Gotta go, put my tray in the upright position, and stow away all electronic devices and breathe.... Because I'm finally home!!!
Here's a few final pictures from some of the great times in our trip.
Hope you enjoy, and we'll look forward to sharing future adventures with you!

Invited to attend the Mariposa Figure Skating Gala...

I talked (by email) to Gary and Sandy, who crew this fabulous tug earlier this week, we had been attempting to meet up on Vancouver Island this summer, and also spoke to someone on the telephone today who was interested in chartering this vessel, and it all reminded me of a great special that this yacht still has in effect.
Until the end of October, 2010 any charters CONFIRMED (Not actually completed) have an additional 25% discount on them.
This means:
Special rates are: 2 pak = $11,500 less 25% = $8,625 (savings of $2,875)
4 pak = $14,500 less 25% = $10,875 (savings of $3,625)
And, there is 5 hours of day complimentary fuel (accumulatively over the 7 nights) included. All else is fully inclusive.
I said today to someone that this is one of the few power yachts that I would trade the multihull we own for in a heartbeat. I absolutely love it and no expense has been spared in setting it up.
They do not have a lot of availability on the yacht though. They are open between November 8th and 21st in the Virgin Islands.
They drop off a charter in St Lucia on December 29th and pick up a charter in the Virgin Islands January 19th, so there may be an opportunity for a couple different venues in there and additionally, they have space after about mid March in the Virgin Islands.
Gary and Sandy bought a RV last year, (we have compared RV stories for years...) and apparently they were "running the snake River this week on a Boogie Boat" I am not even sure what that means, but I bet it is not something I am interested in doing personally! Then they are off visiting to Kelowna, and going to dirt track racing at Skagit Raceway and Grays' Harbor before rounding their time "off" this summer before chartering. Not. Sure. That. It. Sounds. Like. Time. Off. To. Me!
I have quite a few pictures of the boat on my webpage here
I truly am impressed by this yacht and crew, in case you could not tell...

In August of 2010 we received a note from Patrick that as the economy is still lacking, he will be concentrating on the value captain only charters. I will let him tell it in his own words!
"Ok, the recession is still here. As a charter guest, if I had to lower the cost of my sailing vacation, I would not be willing to accept an older or a smaller boat. I would want to continue enjoying holidays in the comfort and style that I was used to. Even if I could not afford to charter one of those beautiful yachts offering fully crewed charters and delicious gourment cuisine.
As a captain, I consider that sailing and enjoying water pleasures are the most important aspect of a yachting experience. Besides, the BVI has the privilege of being loaded with great bars and restaurants ashore. So, this season, I wish to focus on Captained Charters to offer savings and flexibility to those who were almost resigned to postponing their vacation to a better time.
We will offer 2 different charters:
Captain Only: Where you take care of the provisioning and cooking. Provisions can be ordered on line through Riteway, or I will drive you on the first day!
Half Board: Where I leave the helm for the galley to prepare healthy breakfasts and tasty lunches, bringing my french touch to a friendly cuisine. Dinners could be taken ashore or on board where the galley and new MAGMA barbecue would be available to the guests. Standard Bar and Drinks will also be provided in the half board charter."
Patrick is happy to teach sailing, celestial navigation, tying knots and chinese chess. I am not sure I know of another charter captain who teaches Chinese Chess!!
English, French and Italian is spoken on board. Oteka is available in the British Virgin Islands between September and June and in the Turks and Caicos July and August. Oteka is privately owned, operated and meticulously maintained by Pat Beaufront.
Winter- BVI (7 nights)
Capt. Only: from $7270. to $9410.00
Half board $8670. to $11790.
For more links and information on Oteka, I have just updated our web page on them today here

After turning down several charter requests for next summer's period, we have decided to open up Promenade for 6 more weeks of charter next summer. May 29th to mid July sometime, we will do charters in the British Virgin Islands...Unless someone wants a longer charter somewhere else!
I enjoy the diving so much at that time of year I can't not be there! We will however, still be closed during the month of May so I can take my parents over to Ireland and the United Kingdom (or maybe it is just because I have had enough of doing charters in May when it rains like crazy for some reason)
We now have the follow openings for next season:
December 4th through the morning of the 27th (Xmas week has a 10% surcharge on it)
February 13th through 23rd (cabin only sailing, 3 cabins open for either 6 or ten nights)
March 6th through 26th
April 15th through 22nd
April 23rd to April 29th (HOLD on this week. Hold on Aug 10th, 2010)
May 29th through mid July, I have recently opened this time period up as I have had so many requests for charters at this time period.
I don't think those weeks will last long, so don't hesitate!

In July I had a charter group on Secret Oasis, part of the Voyager Fleet. Our Brazilian Guests enjoyed themselves immensely. Now comes news that SECRET OASIS is leaving Voyager Fleet and go into the private charter market this coming fall, with a new crew of Richard and Adele.
Secret Oasis, is running exactly the same price point as the other former Voyager crewed charter yachts that are in the private charter market, between $21,000 and $23,500 for 7 days inclusive up to ten guests. They are still showing availability over the Xmas and New Years season of 2010.
I have put up all the current information I have on the boat and crew on my web page here
Happy Yacht Hunting!

Gordon is always so good at keeping everyone updated on what Liberte is doing and where it is at. I love it when the boats constantly send out updates...

There is not much to say here regarding travelling and the Charter Industry;I see that some Boats are still in service in the BVI`s and the USVI`s,some are down-island in the St Lucia area, some in Grenada and of course some,Liberte` included, are in Trinidad having maintenance carried out. Many yachts are spending their time out of service marking time in the water, saving those precious Dollars where they can.
In fact,it is very interesting to see the developments in the Trinidad Marine Industry,or shall I say lack of action?
It is unusually quiet down here----possibly the affects of whispers of 'dangerous seas' between Grenada and Trinidad,as other Windward and Leeward destinations sharpen their pencils and services and, whilst the Yards are fairly full here, there seems to be little real work being done, certainly nothing like years gone by when Chaguaramas was a veritable power-house which at times appeared to be remarkably similar to the old Wild West. Those were the days!Nights of laughter, drinking and dancing and good cheer at Peakes.
Alas,all is much quieter now.
What does soon change a lot on Liberte` is the departure, after three full years of unstinting and absolutely loyal service,of Jacques Erasmus.
Jacques has been the character that our Guests love;He has given unselfishly to our Guests and to his Skipper and to the Firm of which we at libertecharters are all a part.He has done literally hundreds of tasks here----from scrubbing decks to painting decks to varnishing to cleaning dinghies to taking guests diving and bar-hopping,to keeping everyone amused and to looking after his pet love, our Website and Newsletters to you all.He raises sails, picks up moorings, fetches fuel, deals with Immigration and Customs and still finds time to sit in the cockpit strumming his precious guitar at sundown, icy Carib at his side, smile on his face.
Jacques, you came to this Industry as a rookie, picked up the ropes running nearly three years ago here in Trinidad, got your 200-ton license and now leave us in your wake as you reach over the horizon!
I hope you learned a lot with us and from our friends in the Charter business and that you will quickly forge ahead at University in January in South Africa and carry on to make a real future for yourself in South Africa.
You will be missed by my colleagues and by me in particular.
It has been a great three years for everyone and Tickles Pub in Crown Bay in St Thomas will be devastated....
"May the sea always be on your aft quarter and the wind warm and on the beam".
Sail well,my friend. We will be watching you.
Joining Liberte` in mid-August will be Cuan Nicolay, also from South Africa.Cuan was educated at Selbourne College in East London, a smaller city on the East Coast and has lots of miles under his keel, both in smaller beach cats and larger cruising Cats.Cuan has sailed in World Championships on Hobie 16`s,has sailed the treacherous South African coast on Monohulls and has sailed as far abroad as Fort Lauderdale. He is a qualified Diver, has a Skippers ticket and is itching to get into the real tropics and crystal clear water of the BVI`s,the Leewards and Windward's.Cuan has a great warm personality and has always wanted to get involved in the hospitality and sailing Industry. We are sure that you will find him to be helpful, entertaining and good to be with.Cuan will be helping me compose and send out the Newsletter every month.
Welcome aboard,Cuan.I am sure that you will fit in really well and become a force to be reckoned with in our team.
Libby will be at the Tortola Show in November with Cuan aboard as Mate,Mary as Chef and all shining and maintained in her usual fashion, waiting to serve you all in her excellent manner as has been for the past 10 or is it 11 or maybe 12 years?
Time flies,sure does!
See you all soon----come on down and sail this Winter and keep those toes and nose warm....
Sincerely,
Gordon

Every year between the months of June and November the Caribbean experiences its annual Hurricane Season. It's during this time of the year that Liberte' sails South away from her home waters in the Virgin Islands to Trinidad and Tobago to escape any chance of being caught in a hurricane. Trinidad is well known as a safe haven for yachts of all shapes and sizes during Hurricane season. The Island of Trinidad is far enough South to avoid most Hurricanes, this doesn't mean that Trinidad has never experienced a Hurricane, it just means that hurricanes are not as common in Trinidad as they are elsewhere in the Caribbean.
Liberte' and her crew spend this off season period docked in a huge bay on the Western edge of Trinidad called Chaguaramas. Chaguaramas has been Liberte' off season home for many years now and the boat and crew are well known and respected here. There are many boat yards and contractors of all sorts here in Trinidad and we find Chaguaramas to be a great place to get pre-season work done, everything from new curtains to paint jobs to servicing machinery. This bay is also home to many commercial operations, like Oil rig Service ships and a sword fishing fleet.
Trinidad has a lot to offer for us as crew, friendly and helpful people, malls, movies, restaurants and much more. Simple commodities that other Islands lack.

Trinidad has always been well known for off season boat storage and boat work, but as Gordon mentioned, there is definitely less boats and less work being done here in Chauguarams compared to previous years. Trinidad has so much to offer to yachts and Chaguaramas bay has a great opportunity for visiting yachtsmen to see this great Caribbean Island while at the same time have their boat sheltered from hurricanes.

Talk about personalized service to your guests! Better then making the dolphins show up at 2 PM every day is having an Eagle Ray come visit while you are having cocktail hour....
"Early yesterday evening whilst our guests were sitting in the cockpit of Caribbean Dream enjoying cocktails and snacks in Marina Cay, we heard a loud commotion coming from our tender which was tied up to the back of the boat. We looked over and saw that a spotted eagle ray had launched herself into the tender and was flapping frantically trying to get out. We got the boat hooks and tried to lift her up with them but she was flapping so wildly that it was impossible. After about 15 minutes when she had finally exhausted herself, Kelly managed to get the boat hook in her beak and flip her over the edge and back into the water. She just floated there for a while and then flapped off on her way. Our guests took these two photos.
It must have been a female because she took along a pair of flip flops belonging to one of our female guests with her!

I am wondering if they are putting it on their spec sheet now the Eagle Ray sighting times???
Here also is a short movie of the Ray trying desperately to escape!

Monohull Liberte and their crew have been down in the Grenadines for the last couple months, and I thought I would pass on Captain Gordon's monthly newsletter to share...

Its been a sunny two months down in the Grenadines for Liberte' and her crew, with a great 10 day charter with repeat guests the Hollis Party, who we met at Marigot in St Lucia and dropped off in Grenada. We had some excellent sailing through this beautiful Island chain, especially on the last leg from Carriacou to Grenada where we managed to attain hull speed of 9.8 knots on a great long broad reach. The charter ended at the new Port Louis Marina in St Georges, a facility that is growing by leaps and bounds and will soon fill the lagoon with floating docks, leaving no space for anchoring.

We found Bequia to be as beautiful as ever but fairly subdued with the local folks saying that this season had been quieter than last.
With the season winding down we made our way over to Chaguaramas in Trinidad where we will spend the duration of the hurricane season and allow the crew to take some leave once the boat is out of the water for maintenance.
We already have several enquiries for the new 2011 season and the feeling seems to be that the US economy is finally showing some positive signs which I am sure will filter down to the travel and hospitality industry and therefore down to crewed charter boats.
After an absence of a couple of years Liberte' will definitely be showing at the Tortola Boat show and we look forward to seeing all our friends in the industry and reintroducing them to the traditional and comfortable cruising boat that is Liberte'.

The Conch shell is a big attraction to all visitors here in the Caribbean, the meat is used for local food dishes like Conch Fritters or Lambie stew, the shell is used for souvenirs and Conch Horns that can be bought or found on many beaches.Whatever the use may be, these magnificent creatures have survived on this planet for thousands of years but yet there is very little known about Conch.
On board Liberte' we often hear questions like "how do conch grow", "why are some bigger than others", and "are there baby Conch too?", so we thought it may be time to do some proper research into how exactly these beautiful shells and their inhabitants come to life, grow and add to the undersea environment here in the Caribbean...
The Conch shell is the exoskeleton of an animal that lives inside of it called a Mollusk.
Mollusks have inhabited the earth for over 600 million years and can be found throughout the world on every continent and in every ocean. Most Mollusks prefer calm seas and warm climates, that is why there is an abundance of them here in the Caribbean.
The Mollusks shell is the product of the Mantle, a fold of muscular flesh which covers the back and sides of the animal like a skirt. The Mantle has many pores through which the animal secretes a thin Limy substance which solidifies quickly into a thin layer. These layers are built up one upon the other, often crosswise, until the mass is built up into a shell. Often, the surface is "final Coated" by the animal with a thin porcelain-like finish. The outer edges of the mantle continue to secrete, allowing the shell to grow in width and length, while pores in the mantle within the shell add to the thickness of the shell and also performing any necessary repairs.
The Mollusk inside the shell secures itself to its shell by one strong muscle at the top of the shell. Conch have a foot which they use for locomotion, a head, eyes, and they eat by means of a file-like tongue coated with teeth which may reach twice the length of its body.
Mollusks lay eggs, but reproduction amongst these animals varies greatly, some retain the eggs inside the parent until ready to hatch, some spray their eggs into a cloud of sperm ejected by a nearby male...
Believe it or not but squid and octopus are also mollusks! They, unlike other Mollusks, do not create shells for themselves.
One of the most famous uses for a conch shell is to use it as a horn, local fisherman here in Caribbean all use a conch horn to communicate to the towns people that there is fresh fish for sale...
Conch thrive in the Caribbean, they grow quite quickly, and even though they are being hunted by us humans, they still manage to keep going, every time you snorkel in the Grenadines you see at least a few Conch, some small and some huge. They are very important to the health of many Coral Reefs here, they help keep the reefs clean from algae and play a major part in the natural food chain.
These animals will forever be a tasty delicacy and we will always find some use for their shells, but now we really know what they go through to get to the edible or collectable size!
